We’ve all read them before… long emails filled with huge chunks of text. As you skim read these emails you read about places you’ve never been to, people you’ve never met.
You simply can’t relate to it. It’s dull, it’s a little boring.
Don’t bore your friends and family by sending out huge emails about things that seem exciting to you but will be lost on most of the audience.
Take a different approach.
Here are our 5 Must Know Travel Blog Writing Tips:
1. Get Yourself An Online Travel Blog
First of all, you should find yourself a travel blogging site that you like. By using a online travel blog you allow your audience (friends and family) to choose if they really want to read about your travels. They can browse your blog at their leisure rather than being bombarded by long winded group emails. The beauty of this is that they can read as little or as much as they like, unlike a daunting long email where most people will give up after a short skim read.

2. Write About The Unique
One thing I realised quite early on whilst writing about my own travels was that you shouldn’t try and write about everything you can, but you should write about those unique happenings. In order to engage your audience’s interest you should write about those exceptional events, weird happenings and general cultural differences. No one really wants to read your itinerary but many writers fall into this trap and write in the style of “we went from A to B and then to this temple and that museum with someone and some-one’s friend” …yawn. People with find it hard to relate to these places and people they have never met.
3. Be Descriptive
Instead of telling people about the tenth temple you have visited one day, be descriptive about your surroundings. Paint a picture in your readers heads of where you are and exactly what it was like. Describe the sights, sounds, smells and happenings in as much detail as you can.
“we went from A to B and then to this temple and that museum with someone and some-one’s friend” …yawn
4. Be Passionate
It will help by writing about those special unique events, you will be excited to tell people about the amazing things that happened to you. This will help you to be passionate in your writing and in turn this will make your post that much more engrossing for your reader. If you find you aren’t that passionate and are struggling to write your post, then don’t write it… wait until there is something really worth writing about.
5. Make Regular Updates
Make regular updates to your blog, this will keep people coming back for more and will also keep you writing. Again, by writing not about the mundane but about the exceptional you’ll find it much easier to keep your blog up to date whilst you’re on the road. You should also take time to reply to any comments readers make, whether they are friends, family or just complete strangers. By doing this it will be much more likely that they will return to you blog for another read.
Keeping an online travel blog takes time and energy, but in the end it is well worth it. I’ve often re-read my blog after my travels and read things that I had completely forgotten about.
Without my blog those memories may have been lost forever.
