Almost overwhelming for many first time visitors, Borough Market is a beautiful vision of fresh produce.
The market has long been one of my favourite markets in London for its fine fresh and interesting English and International produce.
The area of Borough has had a strong association with food markets for a very long time and has had a reputation for being a great source of produce through the ages.
Nearby London Bridge was home for traders selling fish, vegetables, grain and livestock as far back as 1014 but Borough High Street became the markets location after traders were relocated in the 13th century.
Borough Market Today
Today it’s a regular spot for foodies as well as chefs, restaurateurs, tourists and locals.
It’s not only the fine quality and fresh produce that draws people to Borough Market, it’s the people and its atmosphere. On a week day you can leisurely stroll the stalls perusing and tasting but come the weekend there’s a buzz around the market as swarms of locals and tourists come to spend their day.
Diverse Range of Stalls
The community of traders at Borough Market come from all over the UK, Europe and even the rest of the world. So you’ll see more than just good local produce on offer including the more exotic affair. The traders tend to share a passion for good quality for and many of them actually rear, bake or grow the produce they have on sale.
You’ll also find importers at Borough Market who have expert knowledge of their field, perfect if you are looking for something special from far corners of the globe.
With so many passionate and knowledgeable people on offer, Borough Market is the perfect place to ask questions, pick up tips and discover new tastes.
Plenty of Fresh Produce
I visited the market recently and although I’d been many times before, it never fails to surprise me with how alive the market is. You’ll see plenty of fresh produce on display at the market including fresh meat, deer legs, exotic sausages, local food, pies, cakes, fruit, beers, wines and an amazing array of cheeses. Even if you visit the market just to have a leisurely look around it is an adventure in itself.
For those that want a break from all the tasting, drinking, buying and exploring there are plenty of cafes, pubs and eateries in and around the market where you can catch your breath. The courtyard of the nearby Southwark Cathedral is also a much favoured sun sport and lunch break for relaxing and enjoying a snack from the market.
Borough Market can be quite busy on a weekend but for me this is the best time to see the market, when it’s buzzing with activity. The Market is a short walk from London Bridge tube station.
