So I’ve just started thinking about Christmas gift ideas for friends and family but also can’t help thinking what would be on my own travel gadget heavy list!
I stumbled across The Travel Hack’s inspired list of gifts for travel lovers and thought it was about time to do my own for geeky travelers who love a gadget or two.
Everyone has that one person who’s really tricky to buy for at Christmas, I’m definitely not that person! Here’s my list of gift ideas for gadget loving travellers… if my girlfriends is reading, please take note!
LG G Watch R Smartwatch
Although I know the technology or operating system, Android Wear is first in its infancy, I can’t help but want to get one of these interesting looking watches. The LG G Watch R has come out on top out of most of the new smart watches on the market and it looks pretty flash, although it is also the most expensive at £225. Imagine not having to pull out your smartphone every five minutes to check for notifications but instead getting them on your wrist. This functionality plus having Google Maps and Google Voice search draws me towards these watches, the only thing putting me off taking the plunge is having to charge it every night.
It’s still quite early days in the wearables market but it’s exciting to see a range of smart watches available that are only going to improve over time. If you know an early adopter gadget lover in need of a Christmas present, it could be the perfect gift.
There’s a nice review of the LG G Watch R on the Guardian.
UE Boom – Wireless Bluetooth Speaker
I’ve recently been testing one of these portable speakers out (full review coming soon) and I must say I am pretty impressed. I had been searching for a bluetooth speaker to hook up my phone to when back at my flat and I kept stumbling across lots of positive opinions about this funky little portable speaker.
It’s a pretty durable device so you can easily pack it away in your case for taking away on a trip or to a festival. The UE Boom is so versatile that it’s managed to replace my massive set of speakers in my flat and although it’s not a huge device, it has more than enough volume to fill my flat.
You can easily connect to the speaker via NFC but I’ve found that I can “throw” using my Sony Xperia to connect to the device without moving from my bed. I’ve even found myself taking the device into the shower room so that I can have a bit of sing to myself in the shower, I’m not sure I’d do that with any other speaker.
The UE Boom isn’t the cheapest speaker around at £169 but it certainly delivers for the price in terms of quality and durability. So far I’ve not had chance to take it away with me on my travels but it’ll certainly be one of the first items on my packing list and a must have for summer festivals.
Nexus 6
If you know an Android fan like me who’s after an upgrade then look no further, the Nexus 6, Google’s latest flagship phone is not only massive but will be at the front of the queue for any updates to Google’s Android operating system. You’ll also get a pure version of Android on the phone so you won’t find all the bloatware apps that sometimes come pre-installed on other Android devices.
The phone’s getting some good reviews for its razor sharp big display, super fast processor and camera as long as you can handle entering the realms of the “phablet” and it’s expensive price tag starting at £499. Hopefully it’d fit in a Christmas stocking!
GoPro Hero 4 – Silver Edition
When you’re traveling you’ll often find yourself in situation where you want to capture some video but can’t risk using your standard video camera because it could easily get damaged or wet. This is where GoPro cameras are so useful, strap it to your head, surfboard, snowboard, on the side of your car, pretty much anywhere you want to get a shot from and the camera is robust enough to deal with the abuse.
The reason it’s on my own Christmas wish list is because I currently own a GoPro Hero 2 and although it was super useful it is a bit dated and the battery life really isn’t very good at all. The Hero 4 Silver offers many new features over my Hero 2 including wifi/bluetooth to connect the camera to a smartphone for live feedback of what you’re shooting, the silver edition also has a screen on the back for this.
Although I’m currently using a DSLR for video there are a lot of occasions when you just can’t risk using it.If you know someone who travels and shoots video, this is a super fun and useful gift to add to their armory of video equipment.
Sony DR-BTN200 Bluetooth Headphones
My lovely girlfriend bought me a pair of these headphones for my birthday and I haven’t taken them off my head since… ok maybe I exaggerate a little but I’ve been using them an awful lot. At first I found it unusual walking around without any wires in the way but bluetooth headphones give you so much more freedom. On a flight back from Madrid recently I tested out how far the connection would go by leaving my phone in the pocket of the seat in front and wandering to the toilet, surprisingly the music just kept on playing!
The batteries seem to last for a surprisingly long time and charging is as simple as plugging in a USB cable.
Great for a long flight or even just for everyday use, I’ve even used them in the gym too. They’re not overly expensive but super useful. Although I don’t really have another pair of overhead headphones to compare sound quality to I think this pair of Sony’s are very useful Christmas for any gadget loving traveller out there.
Apple MacBook Air -13-inch April 2014
Ok, so it’s not a cheap Christmas gift but perhaps it could be a gift to myself as I really need to upgrade my Macbook Pro because it’s slowly grinding to a halt. At this point I’d opt for the Apple Macbook Air because it’s ultra-light and thin so should fit into any luggage when travel and should have more than enough power to carry out the work that I need.
The 13 inch version is now available starting at £749, probably due to the increasing competition but with the Air being so light, thin and having a keyboard attached makes it my prefered option. The other device getting some good feedback at the moment is the Microsoft Surface Pro 3, although I’m not totally convinced just yet and making the switch back to Windows isn’t appealing either.
