Rough Guide – Make The Most Of Your Time On Earth (£19.99)
Rough Guides have always been a trusty on the road guide book often preferred by many backpackers over it’s rivals for it’s slightly more factual approach and layout.
Rough Guide – Make the Most Of Your Time On Earth isn’t a traditional guide book but the type of book that you would have resting on your book shelf to reach for whenever you need some travel inspiration.
Unlike Clover Stroud’s review of the book over at the telegraph I don’t believe the purpose of the book is to be a checklist of things that you must do. She states that “Life-changing experiences usually happen by accident, and aren’t the kind of things that can be ticked off a list.”. I think that she is missing the point of this book.
For me, this type of book is not one I’d look for practical details of how to formulate a trip but simply a place to find ideas and inspiration.
the Rough Guide’s book covers some weird and wonderful ground…
The book itself is arranged into regions and within each region there are illustrations, activities, places and interesting things to see. Cross referencing the suggestions with the places I’ve travelled to it seems that the book has been very well researched.
From visiting the original birth place of the much loved Fray Bentos pie in Uruguay to Whitsundays sailing in Australia the Rough Guide’s book covers some weird and wonderful ground.
It’s a perfect book for the experienced traveller to pick up to gain a few quick ideas and inspiration. Don’t expect detailed maps and planning material, if you’re looking for that you should surely be purchasing an actual country guide book?
