Much has changed in post-wall Berlin, the city has been a base for many creative types spurning innovation in design, fashion, music and arts. Berlin is still full of history and a visit wouldn’t be complete without taking in some of the great historical landmarks. In the evenings you’ll find cafes are teeming, bars are brimming and Berliners tend to be in the party mood most of the time.
A visit to this historical, trendy and cultural city won’t disappoint many travellers, here are our things to see and do in Berlin.
1. Brandenburg Gate
This massive structure is one of the iconic images of Berlin, and should be top of anyone’s must see list. It was built at the end of the 18th century and is now the symbol of the reunification of Germany in the 1990s.
2. Reichstag
The Reichstag is Germany’s parliament building and although you need to book in advance to get into the building for security reasons, the impressive size and scale of the building is best experienced from the surrounding gardens. If you do go inside the bulding, you may even be lucky enough to see Germany’s parliament in action.
3. Checkpoint Charlie
During the partition of Berlin by the Wall, Checkpoint Charlie was one of the only places where people could cross from the East into the West and vice versa. It is now home to a museum about the Berlin Wall and is the best place in the city to learn about the history of the separated city.
4. Tacheles Art Gallery
Housed in a disused building, this art gallery is home to some of the most fashionable artists working in Germany and is seen as a symbol of the new atmosphere in Berlin after the fall of the Berlin Wall.
5. Museum Island
This island in the centre of the city is home to five of Germany’s best-known museums. Visiting them all is no small undertaking, and getting the combination ticket which allows you into all five museums on one ticket is the best way of seeing them all.
6. Berlin Zoo
This Zoo is one of the best in Europe and is great fun for all of the family. The resident panda is the star attaction.
7. Grunewald
Grunewald forest is to the south west of the city centre and is the ideal place to get away from it all and get back to nature.
