If you’re planning a trip to Bruges, brace yourself for fine classic architecture, plenty of culture and history. Bruges is a charming Flemish city and is often referred to as ‘The Venice of the North’ as it’s canals offer the perfect place to take an afternoon stroll.
City may not offer attractions for thrill seekers but it does draw in tourists with its famous iconic buildings, their architecture and history.
It’s a popular destination and understandably so, as it ranks as Belgium’s most popular place to visit. Bruges is a city that is perfect for cycling around, taking a canal boat tour or simply just strolling around on foot.
The Belfry Tower
Based in Market Square this 13th century medieval building has 366 steps, contains 47 bells and dominates the local skyline. Every hour the bells ring out and views for the top are not to be missed. You need to pay an entrance fee to get to the top but views across the old town are worth while.
Historic Centre of Bruges
Most tourists flock to the historic centre due to its famous architecture and charm. The area is easily walkable on foot but take a good map with you. The building in the historic central are mainly of brick Gothic construction but have many different artistic influences. A trip on a canal boat is a good option to cruise around the city providing the weather is good.
Church of Our Lady
The Church of Our Lady is a big attraction for visitors to Bruges as it is home to Michelangelo’s Madonna and Child statue. Equally impressive on the inside as it is on the outside there is a beautifully decorated altar and paintings from the 16th century. The building is constructed in Romanesque and Gothic, it’s also the second tallest brickwork tower in the world.
Market Square
Also know as Grote Markt, the market has been used as such since 958. Is a great place to begin or end your walking tour of the city with plenty of cafes and restaurants in the area. The area has also be traffic free since October 1996 and perfect place to sit back and admire the Belfry Tower.
De Halve Maan Brewery
For those of you who love a beer it’s not all historical buildings and architecture, there’s the De Halve Mann Brewery. You can take the 45 minute tour that also includes a visit to the top of the building where you’ll find great view of the city. The tour costs 6 Euros 50 and includes a free belgium beer, what’s not to like?
