So, I usually find myself in this awkward position.
You’ve just arrived in a foreign country, been shown to your hotel room and there’s that ultra cringe worthy moment when the hotel porter pauses… or does he? Does he need a tip? Am I being rude? Or actually, is it pretty weird for me to be tipping him?
Could I be tipping him far too much? Oh, I’ve got no change anyway!
Now there’s a lot of knowledgeable travellers and locals out there who have been to these places or live there and know what the etiquette is. Primarily, I thought it’d be useful just to have a simple list, but suddenly realised it’d be much easier to crowdsource as much information as possible.
I’ll be looking publish this information on the site but in the longer term I’d like to feed it into a database so that you can select your location and get tipping information.
I need your help
I’ve put together a simple Google spreadsheet that you can add and edit with your local tipping knowledge. Please add as much info as possible and leave your twitter handle as I’ll be publishing those next to each entry.
Add your tipping advice here -> Tipping Like A Local Project
You can help the project by sharing this page, we’re aiming to fill information out for as many countries as possible. It’s an on going project but hopefully with the use of the masses we can create a useful resources in no time at all!
I’m looking forward to creating a handy resource for all you travellers.
