So you know of all the normal bog-standard places to visit in the USA, but where are the weird, wonderful and surprising places to visit in the US?
Well we’ve got a great list of top alternative places to visit in the US to give you a few ideas!
1. Four Corners
You can’t literally travel to the four corners of the globe but you can be in four states at the same time. Arizona, Utah, New Mexico and Colorado intersect at the Four Corners where a wooden platform awaits you, delineated with the quadruple borders.
2. The Parthenon
No need to travel back in time or even to Greece for that matter. You only need go to Nashville to see a historically accurate replica of one of the ancient wonders of the world. The Centennial Park in Tennessee. The Parthenon contains sculptures made from direct casts of surviving original pieces which are curated at the British Museum in London.
3. Don’t Go Underground, Go Underwater
The only way to get to your hotel room is to scuba dive your way there. Situated in the Emerald Lagoon in Key Largo, Florida, it is unlikely you will ever spend an evening in a stranger spot than this. There is a TV in the room but the real entertainment is watching the
sea life from the bedroom window.
4. Go Within
Aside from being a really pretty place to be, the Kripalu – Centre for Yoga and Health, in the little known Berkshires of Western Massachusetts is a great place to reacquaint yourself with yourself. Take yoga classes or meditate, you may be surprised what you find.
5. Ghost Town
It is a strange feeling to walk an empty street in an empty town. Tombstone, Arizona, once known as the town too tough to die showcases many old and abandoned buildings. Travel back in time to the home of Wyatt Earp, Doc Holiday and many other legends.
6. When You Gotta Go
It is the one place we all have to visit and yet a good one is hard to find, especially in a public park. Bryant Park in Manhattan, New York boasts one of America’s top 10 public toilets in a recent survey. Fresh cut flowers and technologically advance toilet seats, make this a must.
7. Namesake
It makes sense that if there is a Ballstown (Indiana) then there would be a Dicktown (New Jearsey) and obviously a Buttzville (Mississippi). It just goes south from there… Actually, north, east, west, virtually all over. From Big Beaver in Kentucky to Striptown in Ohio,
discretion seems optional. That said, I would probably skip Hooker Hole in Louisiana.
8. Hell
The fanatics have insisted Hell is in America and it turns out they were right. More specifically, it is in the Putnam Township of Livingston Country in Michigan. The human race can’t be that bad, it only has a population of 266. There was another Hell in California, but now it’s a ghost
town…
9. Giant
Portland in Oregon is home to the colossal Mill Ends Park, measuring all of two feet across. Apparently it is home to a colony of Lephrechauns and legend has it, snail races. It is officially recognised by the Guinness Book of Records as the smallest park in existence.
10. Playa with no Player
“Racetrack Playa” is a modern day mystery. Referred to as ‘Racetrack’ stones, these rocks move slowly across the surface of the dry lake in Death Valley National Park, Inyo County, California with no visible force propelling them. It takes a few years, but their tracks remain as
evidence.
